Glossary

  • amplitude
  • this is the hight of the EEG measured in microvolts. Like a piece of music, this is the volume of the signal.
  • Autothreshold
  • Autothresholding is when a threshold is updated automoatically. An autothreshold has two parts. First, how often it updates: some update constantly, others update once a minute, others only update when selected by the therapist. The second part is how much data it considers when performing the auto threshold. Many autothreshold modules look at the last 30 seconds of information in order to determine where the autothreshold line should fall. In some system this time span is selectable.
  • AVI
  • files ending in the .AVI extension are animation files (video). These basic animation files can be used with the BrainMaster MMP & AVI player as well as BioExplorer. These simple animations simply play or pause according to reward and are not as complex as Games for neurofeedback.
  • BioExplorer Enhanced Driver for BrainMaster
  • Required when using BioExplorer with BrainMaster amplifier. This feature is enabled via a passkey.
  • COM port
  • Considered to be one of the most basic external connections to a computer, the COM port, also known as a serial port, has been an integral part of most computers for more than 20 years. Although many of the newer systems have done away with the serial port completely in favor of USB connections, most neurofeedback amplifiers still use the serial port, as do some printers, PDAs and digital cameras. Few computers have more than two serial ports.
  • Din cable
  • the 3 prong adaptor cable that connects the electrodes to the preamp.
  • DirectX
  • A set of Windows graphics libraries needed for most games or multimedia applications. DirectX is used by BrainMaster, BioExplorer and other Neurofeedback software.
  • Dongle
  • A device used for copyright protection that must be plugged into a computer to enable software to run. Can resembles a USB thumb drive, serial port or printer port adapter.
  • electrode
  • One of several sensor wires and sensor disks that are connected to the scalp during neurofeedback training. Available in several colors and several metals. While the colors tend to be purely for keeping track of the wires and different color electrodes are functionally equivalent, one does need to be careful not to mix the metals on the scalp as different metals used at the same time can generate their own battery effect.
  • Filter Tool
  • A small window that allows on-the-fly adjustments of frequency bands. Found by clicking the "tools" menu and "filter tool" item.
  • Flash player
  • The Macromedia Flash player is a program that reads files created using Macromedia Flash. Flash files are animations or games that are usually small in size and require less development time than traditional games.
  • Frequency
  • This is the number of cycles in a one second time interval. Frequencies are usually filtered out into various traces for instance an 8-11 hertz filter would display all frequency activity between 8hrz and 11hrz.
  • HASP
  • HASP Dongle - A device used for copyright protection that must be plugged into a computer to enable BioExplorer software. Resembles a USB thumb drive.
  • Impedance Meter
  • A device that measures the resistance of your electrode connections. The impedance meter assists in indicating whether or not you have a good electrical connection and therefore a good EEG signal.
  • MMP
  • Multi Media Player - a utility in BrainMaster software that allows for playback of AVI files and other video files as well as sound files and CD playback during a session.
  • NuPrep
  • Nuprep is an abrasive gel used to clean and prep the scalp for electrode placement.
  • Pro-SB
  • Fiber optic interface for the Procomp amplifier that connects the fiber optic cable ot a serial port on the computer
  • Procomp
  • Digital encoder from Thought Technology, amplifies the EEG Signal 10,000 times and digitizes it to send to the computer. Comes in 3 versions: Procomp Infiniti, Procomp Plus, and Procomp 2.
  • Serial Port
  • Considered to be one of the most basic external connections to a computer, the serial port, also known as a COM port, has been an integral part of most computers for more than 20 years. Although many of the newer systems have done away with the serial port completely in favor of USB connections, most neurofeedback amplifiers still use the serial port, as do some printers, PDAs and digital cameras. Few computers have more than two serial ports.
  • Spare 12
  • A passkey issued by BrainMaster that is required for using Particle Editor and Innertube with the BrainMaster software.
  • threshold
  • used in combination with a measure of amplitude to give a reward based on increasing or decreasing amplitude above or below a certain line. That line is the threshold.
  • USB to Serial Adapter
  • A device that adds an external serial port to a computer. Especially useful for laptops which usually do not have built in serial ports. The device has a USB connector on one end and a 9 pin serial adapter on the other.
